Making Applications to the American Board of General Practice

The first step, in making application to the American Board of General Practice, is to decide down which pathway you wish to proceed. There are currently two pathways that lead to an award of board certification by the American Board of General Practice. These pathways are called the Previous Experience Pathway and the Standard Primary Pathway. The Previous Experience Pathway is the pathway utilized by those who challenge the American Board of General Practice by oral examination. The Standard Primary Pathway is the pathway primarily utilized by those, who are in the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine, and who are in the process of completing the various sections of the Training Program, such as the Module Section.

The primary application involved in the Previous Experience Pathway is the Application to Challenge the American Board of General Practice by Oral Examination. This pathway also requires the submission of one application that is generally considered part of the Standard Primary Pathway which is the Application for Board Eligible Status under the Standard Primary Pathway of the American Board of General Practice. Additionally, this pathway requires the submission of an Application for Admission to the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine. The Application to Challenge the American Board of General Practice by Oral Examination and the Application for Board Eligible Status under the Standard Primary Pathway of the American Board of General Practice can be obtained on the official website of the American Board of General Practice. The Application for Admission to the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine can be obtained on the official website of the American College of General Medicine.

The primary application involved in the Standard Primary Pathway is the Application for Board Eligible Status under the Standard Primary Pathway of the American Board of General Practice. This pathway requires the completion of the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine. Therefore, in order to obtain the first level of Board Eligible Status, an applicant, who is proceeding down this pathway, would also need to complete and submit an Application for Admission to the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine. As stated above, the Application for Board Eligible Status under the Standard Primary Pathway of the American Board of General Practice can be obtained on the official website of the American Board of General Practice. Also, as stated above, the Application for Admission to the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine can be obtained on the official website of the American College of General Medicine. An applicant, who is proceeding down the Previous Experience Pathway, should have already submitted these two applications.

Most physicians, who are attempting to obtain board certification from the American Board of General Practice, proceed down both pathways simultaneously. The reasons they do this are as follows: (1) both pathways require the submission of an Application for Board Eligible Status under the Standard Primary Pathway of the American Board of General Practice and an Application for Admission to the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine (each of these two applications does not have to be submitted more than once), (2) once a physician has obtained an award of Board Certification under the Previous Experience Pathway, he/she is required, under the Previous Experience Pathway, to begin to proceed down the pathway of the Standard Primary Pathway, and (3) at some point in the future, the Previous Experience Pathway will be eliminated.
